Don’t let PE be a thing of the past

With most schooling happening online, it’s important that we create time and space for our kids to get up and move. Our brains require regular breaks to help us process and commit information to memory. Luckily, physical activity increases the oxygen levels in the brain, further boosting brain function. Setting a schedule for regular breaks in our children’s schedules could actually help both of us reduce the stress and improve productivity. As the weather improves, consider exercising outside to take advantage of the fresh air and sunshine!

Let’s take a look at the exercise guidelines for school aged children. The Department for Health and Human Services recommends that children and adolescents ages 6 through 17 get one hour or more of moderate to vigorous activity daily. See the figure for more information:

Scheduling this into our day might seem difficult with everything else going on, but what if you combined it with your own activity needs? Many researchers recommend that even a 10 minute break every hour helps keep us focused and improves productivity. As I outlined in my last post, the average adult needs about thirty minutes a day of exercise. This means “recess” might do as much good for you as for your kids! it’s important to get up from your seat and get moving at various times throughout the day. Whether that’s through getting outside to run around, going out for a walk, or playing active games indoors.

How do you choose?

Ask your children what they like best about recess at school. What do they like to do outside or to exercise? Think about the things you loved doing outside as a kid. Was it playing sports like basketball or baseball? Remember playing games like hopscotch, jump rope, or tag? If you need more ideas, here are some resources:

Helping your children reduce stress and improve both their physical and mental health is important during times of increased uncertainty and stress. Exercise is a positive way to reduce stress, improve relationships and to just have fun together. And remember that no matter how young or old, everyone needs a break from screens and a chance to run around!
